Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 megapixel camera whereas the Apple iPhone has a 2 megapixel camera only.
- Agreed, but a phone camera doesn't have to be of high mega pixel. Most photos taken on a mobile phone stay on mobile phones, they are hardly ever (almost NEVER) printed out after as photographs. When people want to take holidays photos they use a REAL camera.
Nokia 5800 has an extra camera on the front side and iPhone 3G has only 1 camera.
- Agreed, but not a big deal, all that allows you to do is video chat. Trust me we've had this feature on 3G phones for many years now in the UK, never really took off. People are not comfortable with it in public.
Nokia 5800 offers video recording option which is up to 640 X 480 pixels and up to 30 fps with 4X digital video zoom. iPhone 3G does not support video recording and lacks optical zoom feature.
- Agreed for now, but keep in mind it is more of a business (for what ever reason) not to have that feature not a technical one. Apple can add this feature at any time should there be a real demand for it. Which there isn't (outside of the geek crowd).
Nokia 5800 will feature Nokia’s free one-year subscription to Nokia’s new music service where as iPhone users have to pay 99 cents per song.
- iPhone users OWN their music for life for 99 cents, furthermore with absolutely no restrictions whatsoever to do what ever they please with their tracks - when brought from iTunes Plus or Amazon. (remember iPhone is not restricted to iTunes).
Nokia 5800 offers user with replaceable battery and iPhone 3G does not include a user replaceable battery as Apple said it added too much weight to the device.
- Firstly its thickness it adds not weight but honestly how many people actually carry two batteries around with them, what a ridiculous concept (for causal use). For the rare occasion where one would need longer battery life there are 3rd party battery solutions or the iPhone. And for the ones that will say well that makes it thicker...well done you are finally getting it. That is why Apple designs sealed batteries, why should 95% of the market have to carry a bulkier device who are perfectly content with charging it every day or 2, just to please the 5% what carry a spear battery with them. I'm sorry but I mat my mobile phone to be err..MOBILE.
Nokia 5800 claims up to 17 days of standby time whereas Apple iPhone 3G claims up to 12.5 days of standby time.
- Come on, really. Do you honestly think this advantage is even worth a mention, looks like your trying too hard. Do you really think 17 days stand by time verses a 12 day will make any difference to user experience. Plus not to mention one can never assume the claims of battery life of a manufacture until tested, but hell I'll give you that one. No, I'll say Nokia is being conservative and that it's really a 24 days stand by time, there you go twice the stand by time as Apple. I really don't think anyone will notice let alone care.
Nokia 5800 music service can sync with stereo Bluetooth where as Apple iPhone does not offer these capabilities.
- Yeah you try using those bulky, battery/power limited low quality overpriced headphones and see what happens to that 17 days battery stand by time of yours, you'd be lucky to get half a day and thats before you've even made a call. Again there are reasons when Apple limit certain "features", this is not a technical limitation. It's the user experience Apple concerned off.
Nokia 5800 supports files sharing such as Mp3, images and video via Bluetooth and Apple iPhone 3G does not offer this functionality.
- Agreed, again I do not think this a deal breaker feature, but yes it would be nice to have as unlike a removable battery or stereo bluetooth sync doesn't actually have a real side effect. But as always this is not a technical limitation but a chosen one, I would think security issues are the concern for Apple when it comes to bluetooth file transfers.
Nokia 5800 supports voice recognition for voice dialing whereas iPhone 3G does not support voice recognition.
- Nice to have but a non deal breaker again, the only time this is needed is when driving, otherwise who cares.
Nokia 5800 supports Flash so users can easily watch Youtube videos and play flash games and currently iPhone does not support Flash files as Apple claims it slows the phone’s browsing.
- You are miss informed again, it's a power hog which also makes it a battery hog, want proof? Browses a Flash based website or YouTube (Apples YouTube app is not Flash based its mpeg4) on a laptop and watch the battery indicator status, which by the way has a giant battery in comparison. So you will be Browsing Flash based sites while listening to music using your stereo bluetooth headset. Are you planing on reserving any juice to use your phone to make say something like a PHONE call?
Nokia 5800 is much cheaper than iPhone (unsubsidized).
- Heard of the saying, ' You pay Peanuts, you get Monkeys'.
Now I could go onto the advantages of the iPhone (which you neglected to mention) like for example the Capacitance Touch Screen for real multi-touch UI, slim MOBILE design, a real APP store, advanced regularly (freely) upgraded OS with UNIX underpinning and so on...
But I won't, because anytime someone starts listing a bunch of features and uses only that as an argument as to why one product is better that the other, shows their weak narrow minded thinking and lack of understanding. They really do not have a clue.
Here is a case study for you to go research later for your next blog subject.
Why did the iPod dominate dispite other feature packed and low priced products being readily available on the market?
Head start. Its the User Experience Stupid.

/agree
I would add also :
*Nokia 5800 supports MMS ,very important here in Europe, while iPhone 3G doesn't support it
* Nokia 5800 doesn't need any "jailbreak" to install freely any of the tons of s60 apps while the iPhone 3G requires to connect to app store that decide for you what you should use or not use.
to not forget for sure that, aside of supported stereo BT ,nokia 5800 should also support other BT devices like BT keyboard, BT pens and other more exotic devices

The Base of an OS is not important if all you see of it is eyecandy in the most restricted form... I have been playing around with the iphone every once in a while to see what the buzz is about... It does not feel "fair" and it has commercial written all over it. It gives you some technical gadgets to have you pay and pay and pay to have some basic other gadgets.
If you use a phone to place phonecalls, buy a phone without a touchscreen.

just wanted to correct this factual error in ecrah's comment:
"iPhone users OWN their music for life for 99 cents,"
with the nokia "Comes with Music" Service, you get to keep all the songs you downloaded during that 12 months afterwards as well.
so you own your music for life for free.

as for the other anti-points he makes - they're basically a matter of taste, and i for one would much prefer a cheaper smartphone with greater functionality and the ability to freely install software and do what i want with it, than the "golden cage" apple iphone puts its users into.
the smoothness of the UI is IMO the only real advantage that remains for the iphone, and i expect nokia to take care of that with firmware updates or later with their high-end TouchScreen product. remember, 5800 is still "only" in the mid-range prices, and does not have capacitative TS.
that's for example highly a matter of taste... a feature I can live without. i much rather would use a stylus or the pleck than smear around the screen all the time, which you have to do with capacitative Screens.

first of all i dont uderstand why everyone is comparing the nokia with the iphone. In my opinion we should give enough credit to nokia to spring up a phone this good. I dont think nokia had iphone in mind while launching this phone. Nokia is a largest and the best phone manufacturer oit there and doea ot need to copy anyone. However in my opinion 5800 is far better than the iphone and as i type it from my 5800
The First Commenter is Biased dont listen to him
Apple "OFFICIALLY" SUCKS
Nokia , Samsung , LG and Sony Ericsson are releasing models upon models of new mobile with features 10 times that of the iPhone
Apple released iPhone Only.... they cant do any other stuff you know they are limited
people just dont get it but instead just go for looks and ignore the features
5800 Xpress Music , Samsung Pixon , and LG ARENA are GR8 ALTerntives for the APPLE IPHONE
Apple SIMPLY cant COMPETE these manufacturers anymore
Period.

I don't think that 5800 is better than the iPhone (and yes I do own a 5800).
First all touchscreen is just shit! Why not multi-touch Nokia?
Where is the stopwatch and timer?
Why can i make choose a random song in my library, without choosing one and then pressing next (with shuffle on)?
This might be 11 reason why the 5800 is better than the iPhone, but I could make a similar list with why the iPhone is better than the 5800, and have 50 reasons instead 11!

hehe. I think you are frustrated with your 5800. But in my case, I love 5800 more than iphone. I don't have much reasons but the only problem is that my city is not supported for internet connection for mobile phones and even 3G. And without those, I think 5800 got more facilities than iphone and I will go for it.
I will never know although very tempting to know which is better. I'll be honest your post is very compelling, but no matter how much I see post like these I could never get one. Why? because I have a terrible habit of getting out my car with my phone on my lap lol.Unless they make a drop proof cell I have to go with those cheap 20 dollar phones.
very compelling argument but at the end of the day if I got one of these it'll be broke within 2 months lol.
Working....
